🔥Saskatchewan’s up and coming BBQ
Meet Tyson Schroeder – Lumber Jack Grill Master.
I’m originally from Lumsden SK, and now reside in Moose Jaw SK. I’m married with 2 pretty awesome kids.
I spent the early parts of my career working with at risk youth, and now I work as a Correctional Officer.
I spent 20 years playing and coaching football, only recently stepping away to focus on my family.
When did you get into grilling, and how often do you fire it up?
I first got interested in BBQ around 12 years ago, slowly learning and acquiring equipment. I now fire up the smoker 3-4 times a week.
Name one grilling technique you’ve learned over the years that has served you well.
Temperature over time. Give yourself plenty of time, because no matter what the recipe says, when it comes to smoking meat, it never takes the time you think it will. Trust your meat thermometer, and the food will be worth the wait.
What’s the most unique thing you’ve grilled or cooked?
Tell us about your most memorable day around the grill.
This summer when a friend and I took our KCBS Judging certification. Grilling tri-tip and pork loins at our campsite, and visiting the competition BBQ teams sites and seeing the set ups they had. Was so much fun to be around all these BBQ fanatics!
What was one of your most memorable cooks?
Cooking up a brisket for friends on New Years Day.
What are you cooking these days?
Anything! Love trying new cuts of meats, new techniques and styles.
What is your favourite thing to cook?
I really enjoy the challenge of cooking brisket.
What’s your favourite Lumber Jack Pellet flavour?
I love mixing the Char-Hickory with Supreme Blend.
Who are your BBQ idols?
Bradley Robinson from Chud’s BBQ and Chef Tom from All Things BBQ
What’s your absolute favourite thing to grill?
Tri-tip or ribeye
Do you have any good tips for BBQ beginners?
There is no absolute right way to BBQ, take your time, learn from every cook you do, and cook what you like.
